~Lisa~ Major developed her creativity at an early age, encouraged by her Grandmother who had been introduced to some of England's most notable artists during her own childhood in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
Lisa's work speaks for itself and the various paths of her Life's Journey. Her training has been formal and varied and she has participated in juried exhibits since 1975 and has been honored to be a juror in competitive exhibits along the Mid-Atlantic. Her travels across the U.S., into Canada, and her brief residence in Oahu have all added impact to what she sees, how she sees it, and how she wishes to express her visions using paint and clay.
Lisa participated in juried art shows beginning in 1975 with the encouragement of her art teacher, Lillian Hall, and was chosen to participate in an intensive summer program at Virginia Wesleyan College in 1977 for instruction in acrylic painting with renowned artist and author, Barclay Sheaks, in addition to an introduction to pottery with ceramic artist, Neil Britton. She worked towards a degree in Graphic Arts in 1979 at TCC in Suffolk, VA and enjoyed working with Lane Palmisano. Additionally, she took various courses at different campuses to enhance her composition and knowledge base.
After an extended hiatus from practicing art, Lisa studied with Patricia V. Witt of The Barn Studio Of Art in Millville, NJ - a step that reignited her art spirit. From there, she entered into the Fine Arts and Ceramic Technology programs at Cumberland County College and graduated in 2006 with a 4.0 GPA. During that time, she was awarded "Best In Painting" in 2005 & 2006 in the annual Art Major Exhibit. Her work was chosen and added to a second permanent exhibit at Cumberland County College in 2014. Additionally, Lisa was awarded scholarships and recognition for her scholastic achievements, as well as her creative expressions.
Lisa has participated in numerous exhibits and events at the Clay College in Millville, NJ, the former Vineland Arts Alliance in Vineland, NJ, as well as other venues in Pennsylvania. A short list of some of Lisa's instructors and influences are David Gamber, Sarah Shapiro, Jaqueline Sandro, Pat Witt, Lane Palmisano, Lisa Naples, Liz Quackenbush, Terry Plasket, Lana Heckendorn, Lillian Hall, David & Deb Stabley, Georgina Jonitz, and many, many others. Because of her technical knowledge, she was often selected to act as juror in competitive art events that ranged from grade-school events to professional-level exhibits, maintaining her personal integrity and fairly applying her knowledge base.
"Crickhollow Studio" was formed in 2008 and operated in Muncy, PA. This was Lisa's commercial endeavor that featured ceramic and pottery instruction, painting instruction taught by artist, Lori Sayman, and professional acting courses taught by SAG and AFTRA actor, Rodney Robert Brown. Although the commercial aspect did not flourish, the friendships that were generated in the effort did.
At the present time, Lisa's work is evolving from the purely technical into a different dimension, always taking into consideration her journey, her various paths, and her renewed spiritual experiences. "Underhill Studio" is the name that she has chosen as a result of her physical location, but also as the result of the influence of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy, "Lord Of The Rings," which she has read twice each year since 1975.
A recent stay in another State became a powerful learning opportunity where she met ceramic artist, Winston Taylor, who was named one of Arkansas' "Living Treasures." His enthusiasm and encouragement has been an ongoing energy for over 40 years. And, many thanks to Buster at "A Conversation Piece" in Russelville, Arkansas who provided a safe creative environment and a very unique retail gallery. The "Arkansas Experience," as it's been dubbed, has provided extraordinary subject matter as well as personal growth.
Today, Lisa is creating at home and instructs, on occasion, and is available for private instruction and special groups. She also accepts 2D and 3D commissions, on occasion. She is a member of the "Pen & Brush Club" of NEPA.
~Sean~ Murphy is emerging as a very unique artist with minimal training, to date. His style is readily identifiable, and he is influenced by H.R. Giger, H.P. Lovecraft, Wes Craven, and others in that genre.
Sean participated in several exhibits at the Clay College in Millville, NJ and enjoyed varied instruction with fellow artists and workshop teachers with as much exposure to creative energies as possible. He presents his Life's Experiences through his work which can range from whimsical to mind-bending, and he's always open to discuss his influences that sparked each piece.
At present, he is continuing his exploration with his mother, ~Lisa,~ Deb Stabley, and a host of other talented artists who have recognized the depths of his creativity and have taken him under their wings to mentor his development.
Beginning in Spring 2019, Sean began participating in classes with noted artist, Karen Black, of Sullivan County, PA. He is expanding his vision and scope of creativity with each new artist that he meets and works with. He is a member of the "Pen & Brush Club" of NEPA.
